Yesterday I’ve upgraded my Lotus Notes to the last version (the 8.0.1). Everything worked fine, the only problem I remarked is that the Notes runtime has been installed into C:/Notes and the Data directory is still in C:/Program Files/IBM/Lotus/Notes/Data, that is the location of the previous install.

Since I’m pretty paranoiac about the directory order in the file system, I wanted to move the Data directory within the C:/Notes directory. I thought this was a hard and long process but, surprisingly, it consists of just changing a line into your Notes.ini file (the one in C:/Notes).

So, if you want to move the Data directory, first copy it to the desired location (copy, not move, just in case you want to rollback the changes). Then change the following line into the Notes.ini file:

Directory=path/to/the/new/Data/location

Then restart Notes. If everything works fine after the restart, you can also delete the previous Data directory.

If you have Symphony installed with Notes, then you should also tell him that the workspace location has changed. To do so just edit this file: C:\notes\Data\workspace\.config\rcpinstall.properties

changing the following line

rcp.data=C\:/Notes/Data/workspace

Note that now the data directory points to the new location.

After this everything should run smooth. Enjoy!

    This is not working for me. I’m using Notes on linux… Here’s what I’ve tried (repeatedly):

    - rm -r /home/username/lotus
    - start Lotus Notes
    - go through setup
    - /home/username/lotus is created and populated with ~/lotus/notes/data/files
    - copy ~/lotus/notes/data to another location
    - open preferences and set data location to the alternate directory
    - exit Notes
    - start Notes
    - all goes well
    - rename original folder to ~/lotus_bk
    - try to start Notes and get nothing
    - rename ~/lotus_bk back to ~/lotus and it works, even though notes.ini reads the alternate directory.

    It’s almost as if it’s relying on the notes.ini file in the primary directory to point it to the data in the alternate directory, but without that file living in the primary directory it can’t find anything.

    Is there anyway to truly get Lotus Notes to operate from a different directory???

    Best regards,
    J

    Well, it doesn’t work for me either.

    I’m running a laptop with WinXP on it along with L8.0.3.
    What I’m trying to achieve is to move data folder from its default location (c:\documents and settings\\local settings\application data\lotus\notes\data) to, let’s say, c:\data.

    Lotus wants to reconfigure itself after I change “Directory” variable in notes.ini.

    Anyway, nice article.

    Best regards from Poland
